Why we went

We visited Stockton Animal Services to submit a volunteer application, learn about participating in Doggie Day Out, introduce Crossover, and begin understanding the challenges facing dogs in Stockton.

What happened

We delivered the volunteer application and briefly explained Crossover’s investigation into why so many dogs remain without safe placement. We asked staff about the biggest problems facing the shelter. We also provided our contact information and asked that it be passed along to Stockton Street Dogs.

What we observed

The shelter entrance was difficult to locate within the surrounding industrial area and nearby construction activity.

The public lobby was very cramped and congested during our visit. We estimated the space at approximately five to six feet wide and twelve feet long. A conversation immediately inside the entrance made it difficult for others to enter and move around.

Staff appeared busy. Although we were there only briefly, we witnessed both a dog surrender and an adoption.

What staff told us

When asked about the biggest problem facing the shelter, a staff member identified irresponsible ownership. The staff member also confirmed that abandoned or dumped dogs are a significant issue.

These statements reflect a brief conversation, not a comprehensive or independently verified explanation of shelter intake patterns.

Additional context

A major expansion of Stockton Animal Services is under construction. City project plans include an expanded public adoption lobby, veterinary facilities, and other improvements.

The existing cramped lobby may therefore be a temporary condition that the construction is intended to address.

The shelter remains in an industrial area with limited obvious opportunities for pleasant off-site dog walking nearby. For Doggie Day Out, transportation to another location may be an important practical consideration. Program transportation requirements have not yet been verified.

Parking
We parked on the street, where plenty of spaces were available during our visit. We left the shelter's parking spaces available for visitors arriving with animals.
Finding the entrance
The public shelter entrance was difficult to locate. It is tucked beside the construction area, with access from the parking lot.
Arriving with a dog
Posted instructions directed visitors to keep their dog in the car and enter the shelter first. Check with staff before bringing an animal inside. Do not leave an animal unattended in a vehicle when heat or other conditions could make it unsafe; call ahead for guidance.
Inside the shelter
The lobby was cramped and congested during our visit. City plans include a new public adoption lobby as part of the ongoing expansion.
